Verizon may finally bring LTE data to prepaid plans this month
7/4/2014 1:58:26 AM

Verizon has held its stance that only postpaid customers should receive LTE data on its network, but starting this month that may be ready to change. According to a source of Droid-Life, Verizon is set to add LTE data access to its prepaid ALLSET plan on July 17th to better compete with the growing prepaid offerings from other carriers.

Assuming that this comes with no price premium (that's still to be determined), starting this month we could be looking at a base Verizon ALLSET prepaid plan that offers unlimited talk and text with 500MB of LTE data for $45. Verizon also offers month-to-month data buckets at the rate of 500MB for $5, 1GB for $10 and 3GB for $20.

There will be plenty of apps come along for the new breed of smartwatch, and possibly we'll see replacement user interfaces just like we do on our smartphones, but I'm talking about something more basic — changing the default watch face.

Changing your watch face is easy to do, and really changes the look of the device on your wrist. You change them much the same way you would change the wallpaper on your Android phone or tablet, with just a few swipes and taps to make it all happen. Have a peek and see how it's done.

The Red Cross Hurricane app is our go-to storm tracker this season
7/3/2014 3:18:18 PM

Plus more tips and tricks for using your phones during severe weather

We've got our first hurricane of the year — Arthur — and he's starting to make his way up the eastern seaboard. That means it's the perfect time to talk a bit, as we do every year, about how your smartphone can help out with the summer scourge.

This year, I'm using the Red Cross Hurricane app as my go-to tracker. There are a bunch of hurricane apps available in Google Play, but most of them just repurpose data from the National Hurricane Center. There's nothing wrong with that, but I can visit the NHC site for free. For those new to tropical weather, the Red Cross app also has a wealth of preparedness information, including what to do before, during and after a storm, traditional tracking maps, and shelter information. It's basically a one-stop app for severe storm information.

In addition to that app recommendation, let's also take a look at a few ways your smartphone can help you during a storm.

Android in 2015: Bringing 'pure Google' to every screen
7/3/2014 2:00:14 PM

In the next year, Google wants to bring a single, consistent user experience to every screen you own — and Android is a central part of that plan

This year's Google I/O developer conference was a massively Android-centric affair. The OS dominated the two-and-a-half-hour keynote presentation, which saw a new platform version — Android "L" — previewed to developers, alongside new form factors in Android Wear, Android Auto and Android TV.

After three years of the "Holo" visual style (yes, it's been that long), Google introduced a new design language called Material Design. The move is as significant for Google as the switch from iOS 6 to 7 for Apple, or Aero to Metro for Microsoft — not least because the new design language will pervade every screen on which users view Google's services. Needless to say, that's a lot of screens.

With Material Design, stock Android becomes much more than a bare foundation for OEMs to built atop. It's a visual style intended to present Android as a Google product with a matching personality, same as Chrome OS and Google web services. So it's fitting that as Google prepares this new design language, it's also exerting more control over Android devices, ensuring consumers actually get to see it.

Read on to find out how Google's going to repeat its Chromebook strategy in new product categories to bring "Google experience" software to a wider audience, and how it could leverage its strength in mobile to address one of Chrome OS's greatest weaknesses.

7/3/2014 1:57:24 PM

HTC today published financial details for the second quarter of 2014, showing signs of stabilization for the struggling smartphone maker in the months following the launch of its latest flagship phone. With unaudited quarterly revenue of NT$65.06 billion ($2.173 billion) and a net profit before tax of NT$2.76 billion ($92.3 million), HTC just barely met its Q2 prediction of between NT$65-70 billion. The figure is down on the NT$70.67 billion HTC brought in during the same period last year, but up from the NT$1.8 billion ($60 million) loss it made in the first quarter. The company also revealed monthly revenue figures for June of NT$21.917, up slightly from the previous month's NT$21.065 billion, but down 0.72 percent year-on-year.
